The NDIS, explained without the jargon

The National Disability Insurance Scheme can feel like a lot to take in — acronyms, portals, plan categories. This page is the plain-language version: what it is, what it covers, and how it works if you're getting started with Henari.

What is the NDIS?

The NDIS is the way the Australian Government funds support for people with permanent and significant disability. If you're eligible, your plan gives you funding to pay for supports that help you live more independently — at home, in your community, or working toward personal goals.

It doesn't cover everything, and it isn't the same for everyone. Every plan is built around the individual's own goals and circumstances.

What can NDIS funding be used for?

Depending on your plan, funding can go toward things like help at home (personal care, meal preparation, domestic assistance), getting out and about (community participation, transport to appointments and activities), overnight or respite support, support coordination to help you make the most of your plan, and equipment, therapies and other supports listed in your plan.

Your plan sets out what's funded and how much — Henari can talk you through how our services line up with what's in yours.

Am I eligible for the NDIS?

Broadly, you'll need to meet requirements around age (generally under 65 when you first apply), residency (Australian citizen, permanent resident, or Protected Special Category Visa holder), and disability (a permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to take part in everyday activities).

Eligibility rules have detail we won't try to condense onto one page. The NDIS itself is the right source for a definitive answer — check eligibility at ndis.gov.au or call the NDIS directly on 1800 800 110.

If you're not sure where you stand, Henari can also point you in the right direction — get in touch and we'll talk it through.

How do I use my plan with Henari?

How your plan is managed can affect which providers you're able to use your funding with. Speak with us about how your plan is managed and we'll explain how that works with Henari's services — no pressure, no jargon.
